Grand Canyon formed by Noah's flood?
Written by Simon Gray on the 29th o December, 2006
Well, apparently the employees at the famous national park in America cannot oppose this view because of pressure from the Bush administration. A total of 22 books concerning the (apparently) disputed scientific claim of the age of Grand Canyon were also not permitted to be sold in the park shop. Meanwhile, the book about how the biblical events formed the landscape is not only permitted, but endorsed.
I found this article on digg.com which also had a comment attached that I just have to post here:
"the Grand Canyon was created by Noah's flood"
What a coincidence! So was the crack in my ass!

For Christmas I got...
Written by Simon Gray on the 26th o December, 2006
A keyboard (for playing music) and a ticket to next year's Roskilde Festival so I guess I know what I will be doing in my spare time now. I'm a a guitar player, so having to adjust to playing the piano is quite difficult, but I'm sure I will learn in time (and once I find some proper lessons - anyone know any good, free online piano/keyboard lessons?).
The keyboard had some Windows software accompanying it so I wiped my harddisk (just Ubuntu on it) and reinstalled Windows using the recovery CD provided by ASUS, but although it installs without any issues it doesn't recover the bootloader (GRUB presently, which cannot boot up Windows either anymore) and adding Ubuntu, thus making it dual-boot, doesn't seem to help at all, so I'm back to a single-boot Ubuntu system. It is pretty annoying how manufacturers don't take into account the fact that the users may need to change bootloaders and cannot be expected to stay with the initial bootloader for all eternity.
Another present was the new Beatles CD, Love, which is basically a collection of mash-ups of Beatles songs. Often a handful of songs, not just two, are used in each remix. It's actually surprisingly good, but definitely for people already familiar with the Beatles' discography.
Next year I will start updating this blog regularly again, this time with interesting content ;-)

I'm in a band
Written by Simon Gray on the 19th o December, 2006
I now play the lead guitar in a 6-piece band which I auditioned for and then joined last Friday. I've known several of the band members for a while, so it's all joy. The music played is mainly rock song covers (pretty broad).
They use a rehearsal room with amps, drums, toilet, and a kitchen available every Friday afternoon/evening which only costs 100 kr. per year to rent (= $17.5 USD), or so I was told. It is owned by a musicians association so I guess they pay the real costs out of charity.

Sex with animals up for referendum?
Written by Simon Gray on the 30th o November, 2006
I thought this was funny (article in Danish). Apparently, Dyreetisk Råd (the Council for Ethics relating to Animals) has concluded, after much research, that sex with animals shouldn't be completely banished in Denmark; Since the thirties, it's been legal to do as long as the animal isn't harmed in the process. The council was summoned by the politicians to see whether the law was in need of a reform.
Now, following the conclusion of the council, the major opponent of animal sex Dansk Folkeparti wants to let the people decide, so they're suggesting we hold a referendum on whether or not animal sex should be legal.
I definitely think this is the way to go. Not because I'm a proponent or opponent of it myself, but because I can't even begin to imagine how much fun it would be writing that big fat X on a note saying "Do you think animal sex should be illegal?" while picturing a Jutlandic farmer doggy-styling a pig. The taboos associated with it could fill countless newspaper comic strips for years to come.
Here is one of the funny, yet serious posts in the comments section:
Klingesor: (...) You can butcher them and serve them in small slices, but people who have that kind of tendencies can't shag them? I sure hope that everyone who are touting animal welfare and normality-fascism are vegetarians. Otherwise, it's a really sad kind of Disney'fied doublethink, which only stems from sexual scare and petit bourgoise thinking (...) So just try speaking once more about that traumatised cow.

Hungarian translation for "How to install ANYTHING!"
Written by Simon Gray on the 26th o November, 2006
Török Márton has created the Hungarian translation for How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu!. He has done an amazing amount of work on this and now Hungarian users can use the guide in their native language.
This brings the total amount of translation up to two, the other being the Portuguese translation.
I have had a little uploading trouble related to some router issues, so even though Török Márton finished this translation a while ago, I haven't been able to upload it until today. But now it's up! Great work, I'm almost sad I can't read Hungarian! Looking over the document it seems a very interesting language.
Török Márton - your rock! :D
